SHS students charged GH¢700 for accommodation in Cape Coast

Parents of first-year Senior High school students at the University Practice Senior High School (UPSS) in the Central Region are being charged between GH¢700 and GH¢500 for hostel facilities.

Authorities at the school said the boarding house could only accommodate 20 girls and 80 boys.
The situation compelled parents, especially those who had come from far distances, to send their children to hostel facilities, the Today Newspaper reports.

Some of the parents also indicated that the school is asking them to pay GH¢10 for prospectus which is available for free in other schools like Adisadel, Mfantsipim.
The parents have since challenged government to change their wards’ schools to those with boarding facilities since they cannot afford the huge amount for hostel facilities.
Meanwhile, per the Free SHS policy, all fees approved by the Ghana Education Service Council for first-year students have been absorbed by the government, except dues from the Parent Teachers’ Association.

But what are the fees being absorbed by the government, and how much is going to be paid for each student?
