Sex for EC job’ comment was a ‘joke’ – Ken Agyapong

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has explained that his comment that the chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) was rewarded with the job after engaging in illicit sexual activities with a top official in the country was “a joke.”

The Legislator while addressing supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Kumasi suburb Asokwa in June 2016 reportedly said Charlotte Osei, the EC Boss was offered the appointment in exchange for sex.

Gender and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, Foreign Affairs Minister, Hannah Tetteh and several women groups have since condemned the comments.

Other pro-women groups and Queenmothers have also petitioned Parliament to sanction the firebrand MP.

Two months after making the comments, Kennedy Agyapong speaking on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’ Tuesday expressed surprise at the reactions to his comment.

“I said a lot of things on that day, even this one, I was joking, I immediately took my seat after making those comments…yes, I was joking…,” he said.

He however blamed Gender Minister, Oye Lithur for the ‘noise’ that accompanied the comment as according to him, the Minister was behind the numerous demonstrations and presentation of petitions to Parliament.

“There is an element of hypocrisy in this country. Nana Oye Lithur was orgainising and paying persons GHC20 to go and demonstrate against me because I have made comments against Charlotte Osei…,” he claimed.

The Law Maker said the ‘noise’ notwithstanding, he can still ‘defend himself easily’ by providing evidence if he is pushed further.

“I have nothing against Charlotte if and only if she would be fair to Ghanaians…,” he said.
