Sack Fisheries Minister -Sam George

Members of Parliament for Ada, Sege and Ningo Prampram, whose constituencies fall on the coast of the country are calling for the head of the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development,

They claim, certain decisions taken by Elizabeth Naa Afoley Quaye would adversely affect fishing, which is the main occupation for residents in the three constituencies. They are also disappointed that the Minister has been unable to institute proper measures to arrest the incidence of pair trawling and light fishing in Ghanaian waters.

Leading the charge, MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George who spoke to the media after the Minister appeared before Parliament said, the inaction of the Minister led to the setting up of a taskforce made up of fishermen instead of security agencies.

The task force he said had no form of training and currently, some of them have sustained various degrees of injury in the conduct of operations.

The Minister he said, has displayed some great level of irresponsibility to the extent of inviting young men from her constituency to face off with some residents of the affected communities who were in parliament to file their complaint.

“It had to take the intervention of the Parliamentary police to ensure that, the people predominantly women and fishermen who came from Ada, Sege and Ningo Prampram to register their displeasure, were not injured by the people brought by the Minister from Nungua,” he stated.

Sam George added that the Naa Afoley Quaye failed woefully in answering the questions before Parliament, indicating that she was not on top of issues and an embarrassment to the government.

Some of her offenses, Sam George said include writing a letter to order the Chairman of the Premix Committee (a trained fisherman) at Anyamam in the Greater Accra region to hand over to the NPP Constituency Chairman, who has no knowledge about fishing.

Naa Afoley Quaye in her reaction to the issues on Accra-based Citi FM denied writing any letter. She, however, admits citing the letter and effecting some corrections of the content.

She also denied bringing some men to destroy parliamentary proceedings adding that, the people only came to support her in Parliament.
