SA High Commission to meet Hanna Tetteh over arrest of citizens

Officials of the South African High Commission will today meet the Foreign Affairs Minister, Hanna Tetteh over the arrest of three retired South African police officers.

The South African High Commission wants access to the men to enable it gain first-hand information about their mission in Ghana.

The Commission also wants to interrogate the three on how they entered Ghana and whether they are affiliated with the company they claim they represent.

On March 20, the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) officials arrested the three ex-police officers in a Central Region town for engaging in suspicious acts Ghana’s security officials deemed a threat to national security.

The trio, Major Ahmed Shaik (retd), 54; Warrant Officer Denver Dwahye, 33, and Captain Mlungiseli Jokani, 45 – were picked up at the EL-Capitano Hotel in the region, where they had been based since arriving in the country early this month.

According to the paper, the three were said to be training some young people in various security drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response manoeuvres.

Meanwhile the NPP has rubbished claims that the three are mercenaries sent into the country to disrupt the upcoming elections. Critics and particularly members of the incumbent NDC administration, have suggested the NPP imported mercenaries to train persons to cause trouble in the November elections.

But the NPP has rubbished the allegation saying the NDC is only seeking to score cheap political points. –
