Progress of work on Tamale Teaching Hospital Project (Phase 2)

Brief background

The first phase of the Tamale Teaching Hospital project started in 2010 in fulfillment of the NDC Manifesto promise in 2008 general elections.

This was a major campaign promise to the good people of the northern region by the late President Prof John Evans Atta Mills then NDC flagbearer in 2008 after the Hospital deteriorated beyond routine maintenance under the 8-year rule of ex President John Agyekum Kuffuor’s government.
The name “Tamale Teaching Hospital “ merely existed on paper because the level of dilapidation and deterioration of the facilities reached alarming stage as a result it was christened as a “death trap” between 2005-2008.

The hospital (TTH) as a result of the extent of dilapidation, patients had to be evacuated from some sections of the hospital during this period. Also, UDS medical students either had to travel from Tamale to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital or Korle Teaching Hospital in Kumasi and Accra respectively for their practical lessons.

Fast forward, President John Atta Mills after assumption in office in January 2009, secured funding for the project. He cut the sod for the refurbishment and reconstruction of the Tamale Teaching Hospital
on 21st April 2010.

HE President John Dramani Mahama then took over in late 2012 after the unfortunate and untimely demise of the late Prof. Mills of blessed memory. HE John Dramani Mahama ensured that work on the project continued as planned.

On 16th January 2014, HE President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the first phase of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) which included some auxiliary facilities like Oxygen center, MRI and CT scan centers among others.

Thankfully, because of the improved facilities after the completion of first phase of TTH, UDS medical students now have the needed facilities to enhance their learning.
Medical students are no longer required to travel 7 or 12 hours to KATH or KBTH for their practical sessions.

HE President John Dramani Mahama also cut sod for the commencement of construction regarding the second phase of the TTH after the inauguration of the first.

I am happy to report that as at the close of day 24th April 2018, the second phase of the Tamale Teaching Hospital is at an advanced stages of completion.

The good people of northern region will forever remain grateful to the NDC especially the late Prof. Mills and JM for the magnificent Teaching Tamale Hospital. TTH also serve as a referral centre for the northern sector of the country.

Below are the pictures of phase 2 of TTH .
