President Mugabe Visits Ghana Today

Africa’s longest-serving president, Robert Mugabe, is expected to visit Ghana on a four-day official from 18th August to 22nd August.

The visit is expected to open corporate Ghana to opportunities in Zimbabwe.

President John Mahama will confer on President Mugabe, the Millennium Life Time Achievement award for his role in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle from British colonial rule.

The official visit will see Robert Mugabe hold bilateral talks with President John Mahama.

During his stay, Mugabe will be meeting with traditional authorities and the Ghanaian business community.

Mugabe will also address the Zimbabwe community in Ghana as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Ghana and Zimbabwe.

President Robert Mugabe’s relationship with Ghana dates back to the time of Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah.

Before he became a politician, Prime Minister and later President of Zimbabwe, Mr Mugabe attended Achimota College where he was trained as a teacher.

He taught at Apowa Secondary School in Takoradi and Saint Mary’s Training College.

He married a Ghanaian, Sally Hayfron, his Achimota College mate, in 1961.

They both left Ghana to Zimbabwe where Sally’s husband pursued his political career.

As one of the leaders of the rebel groups against white minority rule, he was elected Prime Minister, head of government in 1980 and served in that office until 1987, when he became the country’s first executive Head of State.

Amai Sally Francesca Mugabe was much loved in Zimbabwe for the role she played in Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and for cementing relations between Ghana and Zimbabwe.

Sally remained a faithful wife while her husband was in prison from 1964 to 1974. She died in 1992. President Robert Mugabe’s last visit to Ghana was in 2007.

The visit by President Mugabe is expected to expand the economies of the pair, by linking up businesses for their mutual benefit.

The two countries have already established a Ghana-Zimbabwe Business Forum to serve the business interests of the two countries.
