President John Dramani Mahama has charged the newly constituted National Peace Council to inspire confidence in all parties that a fair process of negotiation is possible in all conflict situations.
He said as the 2016 election approaches, the council must continue with its engagement with the political stakeholders in order to sustain the prevailing peace in the country.
President Mahama said this when he swore into office the newly constituted 13-member National Peace Council at the Flagstaff House in Accra.
The President urged Ghanaians to strive to put Ghana first in all things as it is only in a peaceful Ghana that individual and collective aspirations can be achieved.
The newly constituted National Peace Council still has Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante as Chairman.
The Queen mother of Mampong in Ashanti, Nana Agyakoma Difue is the only woman on the council.
President Mahama said violence can never be used to resolve any disagreements.
It is therefore incumbent on Ghanaians to encourage the use of non-violent responses including dialogue, negotiation and mediation.
These, according to President Mahama, are tried and tested and better approaches for conflict resolution.
He explained that the National Peace Council is not and has not replaced the state’s commitment to normal legal or security approaches to conflict.
What has been done, however is to legalise the use of mediation and alternative resolution as a primary response to conflict.
Most Rev. Prof. Asante, who is chairing the Council for a second consecutive term, pledged that the council will continue to be fair but firm with all parties for the peace and development of the country.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com
He appealed to the President, all and sundry to support the council with financial and material resources to enable it to discharge its duties effectively and nationwide.
Other members of the National Peace Council include Nana Susubribi Krobea Asante, Apostle Dr Opoku Onyinah, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih and Rev Dr. Nii Amu Darko.
