President Mahama inaugurates Sixth Community SHS as GHC 60m is allocated to cover Free SHS Education

Government has allocated about 60 million cedis to cover boarding students under the progressively free Senior High School Education for the 2016/2017 academic year.

About 150,000 students with poor backgrounds are expected to benefit.

President John Mahama announced this when he inaugurated the sixth Community Day Senior High Schools at Derma in the Tano South District on the first day of his Accounting To the People Tour to Brong Ahafo.

He said government has also expanded the recurrent fees absorbed on the initial items from 10 to 12 in the second term of the 2015 to 2016 academic year which covered 320,488 day students.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to the traditional authorities for supporting his resolve and vision of building 200 Community Day Senior High Schools.

Citing Secondary School education for the youth in the Brong Ahafo Region, President Mahama said statistics show that about 90,000 eligible secondary school going students are on the other hand not in school because of the lack of space.

He said the situation is the same throughout the country. The President therefore justified his decision to expand secondary education with the construction of the 200 Community Day SHS, and rehabilitation and expansion of existing secondary schools to ensure equitable access.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com

President Mahama said as part of government’s Education Sector Improvement Programme, which has improved the pupil-textbook ratio, more than 3,558,000 textbooks will be supplied to students in second cycle schools while 137,216 teachers instruction guides in the core subjects of Mathematics, Integrated Science, English Language and Social Studies will be distributed to teachers across the country.

The Chief of Derma, Nana Owusu Asante Ababio, was full of praise for government for the projects initiated in his area.

He singled out the new E-block for the Derma Community Day Senior High School and start of work on the construction of the Derma-Asuoso-Techimantia roads for special mention.

President Mahama assured the chiefs and people of Derma that their roads network will be completed on schedule to enhance the transportation of goods and services.
