President Mahama cut sod for 80 major Technical Education Projects

In the quest to give a major face-lift to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), President John Mahama yesterday, cut the sod in Ada to begin construction of a series of infrastructure facilities in technical institutes across the country.

The project, being undertaken under the Development of skills for industry project (DSIP), the initiative will result in the construction of 80 different infrastructure projects in 10 technical institutes, two polytechnics and one university.

The project include classroom blocks, technical workshops, ICT centers, dormitories, dining halls, administration blocks, teachers bangalows and an office complex for the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), all at a cost of 124 million dollars, out of which the African Development Bank is supporting with a loan facility of 112 million dollars and government providing the rest.

In his address before breaking the ground, President Mahama indicated that project was at the heart of his administration’s agenda to effectively invest in the youth for the nation’s transformation.

He was happy that so far under the DSIP, about 1,050 formal and 2,000 master craftsmen apprentices have been awarded bursaries, while 800 master craftsmen have been retained.

The beneficiaries of the DSIP infrastructure project include the Kumasi campus of the University of Education, Winneba, the Accra and Takoradi Polytechnics, Ada, Kpando, Nkoranza, Koforidua, Asanti and Winneba Institutes.
