President Akufo-Addo has pulled down a tweet he made earlier today to congratulate Mrs Charlotte Osei on her appointment by the United Nations as Electoral Commissioner to Afghanistan as the country seeks to step back into a democracy following many years of protracted civil unrest.
News of Mrs Osei’s appointment hit the media earlier today with several social media activists extending congratulatory messages to the former Electoral Commission boss of the Republic of Ghana.
The President’s tweet which attracted huge public backlash was pulled down barely two hours after the President’s Tweeter Handle was updated with the message.
Responses gathered in response to his tweet expressed the anger of Ghanaians which they classified as hypocritical on the part of the president. Some of the responses called to question the competence of the president in dismissing someone who has been seen competent enough for such an international assignment in a country so crucial to the world.
Mrs Charllote Osei was removed from office following a petition said to have been submitted by some Ghanaians whose identities are still yet to be known. Following the Chief Justices enquiry and establishment of the prima facie case, she was removed and replaced by Mrs Jean Mensah.
Several Ghanaians who were against the removal of Mrs Osei have seen an opportunity in the latest appointment by the United Nations to justify their disgust at her removal from office following the successful conduct of the 2016 elections that ushered the New Patriotic Party and Mr Akufo-Addo into office.
