Police turn to court to stop ‘Let My Vote Count’ demo

The Accra Regional Police Command is seeking a restraining order to prevent a planned demonstration on Wednesday by some political pressure groups to demand a new voters’ register. –

The groups; Let My Vote Count, Account for Accountable governance and the Youth wing of the biggest opposition party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), wrote to the Police, seeking permission to march through some principal streets of Accra and end up at the Electoral Commission (EC) and Parliament House to present a petition on the need to have a new voters register for the 2016 elections.

The Police however rejected the group’s request,  explaining that these public institutions are “security zones.”

“…unfortunately, your decision to picket at the Parliament House and the Electoral Commission could not be approved due to security reasons, ” a statement signed by Christian T. Yohuno, Deputy Commissioner of Police early on indicated.

However in a subsequent interview with Citi News, members of the group insisted they will picket at Parliament House and Electoral Commission despite the police order barring them from doing so.

The group has indicated that nothing will stop them from embarking on their intended action.

“…In our understanding the EC is not the place where bombs are manufactured neither is it a place where the president of the land resides for it to be classified as a security zone or enclave,  our understanding is that we notified the police, engaged them and gave them ample time for them to put structures and measures in place to shepherd the demonstrators,” the convener of the group, David Asante said.
