NSS registration turns chaotic as soldiers allegedly assault personnel

Registration of national service personnel was on Monday fraught with chaos when personnel from the military were called in to ensure order.

Prospective Service personnel who have been posted to serve within Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) and La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly (LaDMA) were struggling to go through the process of registration with long disorganised queues.

The military had to intervene to maintain order, but some of the prospective service personnel told Accra-based Citi FM that the scene turned chaotic when the soldiers started using belts and sticks on them.

According to them, they began forming a queue at about 5:00 am on Monday, but at daybreak, the military personnel asked them to re-form the queue which led to some confusion.
The military in an attempt to restore order allegedly assaulted some of the personnel. A lady was said to have sustained serious injuries in the process.
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Ussif Mustapha, who visited the scene said he is yet to be briefed about the incident.

Registration of service personnel often turns chaotic at various centres, particularly in the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions where the most number of personnel are posted.
Many have, therefore, called for an online registration system to replace the current manual system.
