NPP youth group besiege party HQ; demand new voters register

A new pressure group affiliated to the New Patriotic Party is threatening to hit the streets if the Electoral Commission does not compile a new voters’ register.

Members of the group calling itself concerned youth of the NPP found their way to the party’s headquarters, Monday, to signal their readiness to use all legitimate means possible to mount pressure on the EC to compile a new register.

Joy News’ Hannah Odame was at the NPP Headquarters and described the atmosphere as charged.
It is not too clear on whose instruction the group was formed or who invited them to the party’s Headquarters.

Some of the party leaders Odame spoke to said they were not aware about the pressure group.
Led by one Dennis Ahmed the group said they are not part of the Let My Vote Count Alliance, an existing group fighting for the same cause.

The new group has members drawn from Mamobi, Nima, Ashaiman, Taifa all of whom are pressing for a new register.

“We are asking for a new and credible voters’ register. When there is a problem it is the youth [that suffers].

“We are pleading for a new and credible voters register,” Ahmed said, adding they needed to complement the efforts of their leaders who are already demanding for a new register.

The Electoral Commission will be meeting representatives of the parties on October 29 to among other things, announce whether or not a new register will be compiled.

Ahmed said they will not accept anything less than a new register.

“We want to send our message before the 29… Our next action is that we will do a very serious demonstration in Ghana,” if the EC decides to use the existing register for the 2016 elections.
A number of political parties including the Convention People’s Party, and Progressive People’s Party are all demanding for a new register.

Even though the governing NDC believes the current register has some challenges, it believes it should be cleaned rather than having a new one compiled.
The EC is expected to pronounce on the matter on the 29.
