NPP has suspended over 2,000 members – Ofosu-Ampofo

More than 2,000 leaders, executives and supporters of the main opposition New Patriotic Party have been suspended as of the last count, the governing National Democratic Congress’ Director of Elections, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has said.

Speaking at the NDC’s campaign launch in Cape Coast on Sunday, 14 August, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the NPP is in disarray because of the divisive leadership and posturing of flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo, who, he said, has not been able to keep the party united as bequeathed to him by former President John Kufuor.

For this reason, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo told the crowd of NDC supporters that it will be a big mistake to vote for Nana Akufo-Addo in the December polls since he has shredded the party in tatters since he took over as flagbearer.

“The 2016 election is about who can give us peace, it is about who can give us leadership that will ensure peace and tranquility in our country and beyond the borders of our country. President John Mahama has proven himself to be a unifier. … Ghana has become an oasis of peace under John Dramani Mahama…” Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said, adding that: “A tradition like key soap must go on.”

“Peace is the most important thing for every nation, late President John Evans Atta Mills pursued peace, NDC will keep preaching peace, Mahama is protecting the peace legacy Prof Mills left,” Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said, adding that Nana Akufo-Addo, on the other hand, “has not been able to preserve Kufuor’s legacy of peace as far as running of the NPP is concerned.”

To buttress his point, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said: “Nearly 2,000 people have been suspended in the NPP. … Nana Akufo-Addo has not been able to keep even the NPP together, how can he bring peace to Ghana? John Dramani Mahama has made NPP a very attractive party, a very accommodating party, a party that receives everybody. Therefore, we are putting these two people before Ghanaians: John Dramani Mahama and Nana Akufo-Addo. [Into whose] hands can we entrust the peace and security [of this country?]. Between John Dramani Mahama and Akufo-Addo, the person who can protect this country, who can guarantee the peace of this country, who can guarantee a peaceful future for the generation yet unborn is John Dramani Mahama.”

He added that the leadership of a country is not about palm wine tapping for anyone to say he should be tried.
