NPP has no campaign message; has been pair trawling – Kofi Adams

National Organiser of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams says the opposition party has no campaign message for the 2016 election.

As a result, the New Patriotic Party, he claimed, has been engaged in what he called pair trawling.

Mr. Adams said the opposition was overwhelmed by the sterling performance of President John Mahama and had become ambivalent and confused.

He was discussing the opposition of the Minority in Parliament to a proposed constitutional amendment that would have seen this year’s elections held in November.

During debate on the proposal, the Minority leader, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, argued that whilst in principle his party supported the proposal, the Electoral Commission had not demonstrated it was adequately resourced and prepared to hold the elections in November.

Kofi Adams dismissed this argument, maintaining it is the NPP that is not prepared for the elections.

“We have clearly shown that indeed the government has performed that is why the NPP keeps pair-trawling,” he said.

Explaining why he said the NPP was pair-trawling, Kofi Adams said, “Nana Akufo-Addo (NPP flagbearer) started his tour of the Western region and Greater Accra without promising anybody a 1-district, 1-factory project. President Mahama commissions Komenda Sugar Factory…then he says, ‘oh let me go and promise what will outweigh what has been done.’”

“This is somebody who has no message and just intending to lie his way to power,” he argued.

In his view, the only reason the Minority voted to reject the constitutional amendment was to buy time for campaigning.

“They feel that ‘oh let’s extend [the time for the elections which will now be held in December] so we can pair-trawl more because the longer the time the longer we can pair-trawl more; that is what the NPP is doing, they have no message; they have nothing to offer this country,” he said.

Wikipedia defines Pair trawling as “a fishing activity carried out by two boats, with one towing each warp (the towing cables). As the mouth of the net is kept open by the lateral pull of the individual vessels, otter boards are not required.”

Kofi Adams insisted the arguments put forth by the NPP for rejecting the proposal were tenuous.

He said the extension will not save the NPP from defeat at the polls.
