NPP Has Made Bawumia Irrelevant

One person who contributed to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) triumph over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is the current Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr. Bawumia, the darling boy, became a household name during the 2013 election petition challenge where the NPP contested the result at the Supreme Court.

Bawumia’s superb role and his display of intelligence won the heart of many Ghanaians. People who followed the landmark event did so just because Bawumia was involved in it. His intelligent demeanor, good analytical skills and understanding of data won him the title; Mr. Pink Sheet.

The fine economist, Dr. Bawumia, through the cross examination during the 2013 election petition at Ghana’s apex court, exposed a lot of challenges in the electoral system of Ghana which have given birth to many electoral reforms.

Dr. Bawumia’s unique intelligence, coupled with his eloquence, are two unique features about him that are admired by all and sundry. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) largely based on that in their 2016 elections campaign. The astute economist, as Bawumia has been described by many, was projected even more that the Presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, during the 2016 electioneering year.

When it comes to public relations, data management and interpretation, economic decisions and political party propaganda, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stands tall. He has exhibited supremacy in these areas.

Bawumia assumed office officially as a Vice President on January 7, 2017 after his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) won the 2016 elections with a whooping one million (1,000,000) votes difference.

Prior to entering into active politics, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was a deputy governor of the Bank of Ghana. A position which he held until 2008 when he was nominated by Nana Akufo-Addo to be his running mate.

As a renowned global economist, Dr. Bawumia has lectured in a lot of institutions globally. He has lectured in different universities in London, United State and has a lot of academic publications to his credit.

Politically, things appear to be different. Unlike 2016, little has been heard of the darling boy, Dr. Bawumia in this election year. His jabs at candidate Mahama and the NDC appears to be missing. The economic guru has all of a sudden gone mute on the current economic challenge facing the country.

The sudden silence of Dr. Bawumia has caused many political pundit to ask questions on the basis of his seeming irrelevance within the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

Our beloved Economist is missing in action. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the renowned Economist who was loved by many Ghanaians has gone missing in recent times.

It appears the NPP has deliberately sidelined Dr. Bawumia just to make him irrelevant. Many have questioned the ”absence and silence” of Dr. Bawumia and have attributed it to many reasons.

In 2017, the Northern Youth for Peace and Development (NYUPED), a civil society pressure group in Tamale raised issues about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and how the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have sidelined and made him irrelevant.

The Tamale based youth group argued that the same treatment meted out to the late Veep of the NPP, Aliu Mahama is being meted out to Dr. Bawumia as Vice President.

It appears the sidelining of Dr. Bawumia did not start in 2020. Concerns started coming up right after his swearing into office.

Earlier this year, Madam Margaret Ansei, a former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Suhum also questioned the sudden silence and irrelevance of Dr. Bawumia. She questioned why the Economic guru was not part of the committee that was set up to investigate the depreciation of the Cedi.

For most of us, it doesn’t make sense for a big party to leave out such an economic guru especially when the discussions have to do with the depreciation of the Cedi.

The big question is; where is Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia now? Is he in quarantine or he has been isolated from governance?

Is The Akan Factor Playing A role?

There is another school of thoughts that suggest the silence or downgrade of Dr. Bawumia has ethnic basis.

Some political pundits are of the view that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a party which has been tagged by many as an Akan (Asante and Akyem) dominated party will not give room for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a Northerner to thrive.

Those who share in this sentiments believe strongly that if Bawumia is given the space to operate, he will likely succeed Nana Akufo-Addo, an Akyem.

Akufo-Addo’s ”Yen Akanfo” comment has been the reason many have linked the Bawumia’s seeming sideline to ethnic grounds.

The recurring question has been; where is Bawumia now? Has he been made irrelevant deliberately or he is been prepared for December? Has he been sidelined on ethnic grounds as many have questioned or his inability to manage the economy has exposed him?
