A former Deputy Communications Minister, Felix Ofosu Kwakye has said that the Electoral Commission(EC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) claim that the old voters’ register was bloated was just a move by both parties to suppress votes in opposition strongholds.
The EC in justifying its stance for a new voters ID said the old and existing voters register was bloated and contained names of non-Ghanaians and people who had died and therefore needed to be expunged.
The NPP, on the other hand, argued that the Mahama led government and its partners at the Electoral Commission had bloated the old voter ID card by 1.5 million people and their insistence on a new voter register had been since the political party was in opposition in 2016.
But reacting to this excuse from a new voters’ register considering the number of registrants, Felix Ofosu Kwakye indicated that it was a grand scheme by the governing NPP and the Electoral Commission just to suppress votes in opposition strongholds.
He said “The claim of a bloated 2016 register was a gratuitous falsehood invented by Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP to waste hundreds of millions of Ghana cedis in the misguided belief that they could suppress votes in opposition strongholds”.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission says at the beginning of the final phase of the ongoing registration exercise, about 15,108,687 applicants had successfully registered.
Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Affairs at the Electoral Commission (EC), speaking at the “Let the Citizen Know” edition in Accra, said by the current figures, the Commissions’ target of registering 15 million had already been exceeded.
