NDC UK & Ireland Chapter commend President Mahama for making Ghana proud in UK

The United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland chapter of the National Democratic Congrass (NDC) have congratulated President John Mahama who is in the UK on the invitation of the British Prime Minister, David Cameron to attend an anti-corruption summit.

In a statement issued,signed and copied to Ghanapoliticsonline.com by Michael Frempong PRO UK & Ireland Chapter,said ‘Mr President Mahama deserves the standing ovation and the huge applause residents of UK showed him when he addressed them because of the excellent presentation of the numerous projects his government have embarked. The audience were also excited about the economic stability achieved so far amidst challenges the government faced in the energy sector and the astronomical increase in wage bill as a result of the single salary spine introduced’.

His Excellency President John Mahama who is in the UK on the invitation of the British Prime Minister, David Cameron to attend an anti-corruption summit, used the opportunity to showcase the anti-corruption strategies his government has undertaken so far.

We the NDC UK and Ireland Chapter believe that President Mahama was invited to the summit because of his willingness and eager to fight corruption in Ghana and the practical steps he has taken to achieve these objectives.

This is evident in the 2015 Corruption Perception Index published by Transparency International.

Ghana has scored the highest marks on the Corruption Perception Index over the past 3 years. It is interesting to note that Ghana is ranked 56th in the world, ahead of Ivory Coast (107th), Nigeria (136th ), South Africa, Senegal & Italy (61st ), and Kenya (139th) on the world ranking.

It is against this background that members of UK and Ireland Chapter wish to commend His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama for his efforts and achievements in fighting corruption which have been recognised by the international community.

President Mahama was given a rousing welcome to the UK by Ghanaian residents when he took his “Accounting to the people” tour to London and met with the Ghanaian community at Jumeirah Carlton hotel in London.

The meeting was organised by Ghana High Commission in the UK in conjunction with Ghana Council Unions. In attendance were the Associations, Churches, Muslim groups, Professionals, Traditional rulers and other opinion leaders.

The President was accompanied by the Attorney General, Mrs.Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, the Minister for communications, Dr. Omane Boamah, Ghana High Commissioner to the UK, H. E. Victor Smith and other government officials.

Ghanaians demonstrated their true love and appreciation by congregating at the entrance of the hotel where President Mahama met the Ghanaian community with placards and banners showing his achievements, singing and chanting praises to the President for what he has done so far for Ghanaians in his tenure as President of the republican of Ghana.

President Mahama in his address highlighted the four thematic areas his government has embarked on to change lives and transform Ghana.

Government’s efforts to improve access and quality of education were outlined by the President.

He stated that, out of 2,578 schools under trees in the basic education 1,614 of them have been eradicated, this together with other interventions such as free sandals to school children, free uniforms, scholarships and provision of teaching resources such as books and ICT facilities have enabled more children to go to school.

At the secondary level, the President stressed on government’s effort in building 200 community day schools of which 123 are at various stages of completion. This project received a loud applause from the audience. Facilities in 125 existing SHS are also being improved.

Under Health, President Mahama indicated that so far 2 Teaching hospitals, 4 Regional hospitals, 14 District Hospitals, 30 Polyclinics and 1,260 CHIP Compounds are being constructed, some of which have been completed and others are at various stages of completion.

Other areas the President highlighted in his address are; government’s achievement in the energy sector, petroleum, roads, sports, aviation, economy and job creation.

Areas that electrified the audience are key government projects such as; the completion of Cape Coast stadium, the construction of Markets especially the Kejetia and Kotokuraba Markets, the construction of 37 military hospital in Ashanti region, government’s pro-poor intervention strategies such as the introduction of LEAP which has benefited many households and the issuance of EBAN cards to over 60s.

Also the construction of a new terminal 3 at Kotoka international airport which will handle all international flights and the existing terminal which has been renovated as terminal 2 to handle domestic flights.
