The 455-page Report by the Professor Botchwey Committee that probed the National Democratic Congress 2016 election defeat must be of great value to the New Patriotic Party because the party is not ‘immunized’ against the issues spelt out by the committee.
The report suggests various recommendations for the NDC, including steps to restore the capacity and effectiveness of the party’s organs, especially at the branch level where, according to the party, constitutes its strengths.
This should be an issue of great interest to the NPP because, as it stands now, there are a lot of agitations among the grassroots members of the party, who claim they do not ‘feel’ the victory they fought to secure for the party.
And we believe the party must start tackling this issue before it gets out of hand, and begin to create needless problems whose consequences could lead to electoral disaster.
Again, the Report of the Professor Botchwey Committee recommended that steps should be taken by the NDC to strengthen its research and intelligence. We think the NPP, as the governing party, needs that even more than the main opposition NDC.
The NPP’s landslide victory in the 2016 elections was an indication of how the people were tired of the lies and incompetence of the previous Mahama-led NDC government.
The NPP would be digging its own grave if it repeats the same mistakes committed by the NDC, which led to its defeat of cosmic proportion and unprecedented since the return to multi-party democracy in 1992.
The NPP government has taken over the reins of the country at a very crucial time, bearing in mind that it has the opportunity to prove to the good people of Ghana that it has the men and women capable of turning the fortunes of the country around.
Even though the NDC has indicated that the full Report of the Committee would not be made public, we believe the snippets of information emanating from it are enough for the NPP to learn good lessons from.
It is to end that we at the Daily Statesman fully support comments made by the NPP Deputy General Secretary, Nana Obiri Boahene, that the party must capitalize on the findings of the committee to improve its structures and operations.
It is an undeniable fact that many of the problems the NDC faced while in government, and is still having, are also found in the NPP.
That is why the NPP cannot gloss over the report of the Professor Botchwey Committee. The sages can never be wrong when they say a stitch in time saves nine.
