NDC directs members to mind comments against Supreme Court

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has cautioned its members to desist from making comments “likely to compromise, embarrass or impugn the integrity of the Supreme Court and all other constitutionally mandated bodies which are dully performing their duties.

The party says in a statement issued Wednesday and signed by Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary that it has learned that following the Supreme Court orders issued on the 23rd of June 2016, there have been various commentaries passed by many Ghanaians including some functionaries of the NDC some of which are regrettable.

The apex court had on that occasion asked the Electoral Commission to, among others, produce a list of voters on the electoral roll who were deemed to have been registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme cards and also take steps to delete those names from the register. But sections of the public, notably NDC spokespersons, have taken exceptions to comments attributed to the Chief Justice, Georgina Theodora Wood, to the effect that the court would not sit aloof and allow the Electoral Commission to plunge Ghana into chaos.

The court had earlier instructed that all the affected voters whose names are deleted should be afforded opportunity to re-register.

“The NDC as a party wishes to state that its official position on this matter is that the Supreme Court as the apex court of the land is entitled to conduct its business as an Independent body within the framework of our democratic and constitutional dispensation”, the statement counseled.

“All party members should take note and stay away from commentaries that are likely to compromise, embarrass or impugn the integrity of the Supreme Court and all other constitutionally mandated bodies which are dully performing their duties.”
