Nana Addo’s age will not favour him in 2020 presidential contest – EIU

Amidst arguments about the age of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to contest the 2020 elections, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has predicted that his age will be a major threat if he intends to contest.

EIU, which is the research and analysis division of The Economist Group which predicted victory for Nana Addo in the 2016 elections said his age will not favour him and the NPP in the 2020 elections.

The Economist Group reiterated in its report compiled between July and August 2017 said it is a “threat to the prospects of Nana Akufo-Addo, meanwhile, will come from his age. He will be 76 in 2020 and, depending on his health by then, could face calls to stand down in favour of a fresh face.

“However such a process would almost certainly lead to intra party tensions, given the NPP’s history of factionalism, something that would be off-putting to electorate.”

The research organisation added that it will be an advantage to the opposition parties if the President couldn’t implement its campaign promises.
“The NDC could well suffer from internal ructions over who will lead the party forward given the mounting recrimination over its 2016 defeat,” EIU predicted.
