Nana Addo and Donald Trump;presidential candidates of the same feather

Donald Trump and Nana Akufo-Addo are both trying to “uproot” behemoth incumbent parties in their respective election, but what makes each think they possess the abilities to do so?

Whereas Donald Trump is running for presidency on the bill of the Republican Party against the incumbent Democrat party’s Hillary Clinton, Nana Addo is taking on the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama on the bill of the New Patriotic Party.

1. This is Nana Addo’s 3rd attempt, this is Donald Trump’s first

Nana Addo has tried to occupy the Flagstaff House and failed on two earlier occassions, but he (and many others) believe that the third time is the charm whereas Donald Trump is looking upset the system as a businessman with very little political history taking on the quest to gain the White House.

2. Both candidates seem to ride on public praise

Donald Trump is a favorite of the core American factions due to his ideology of “Making America Great Again” at all costs. One of these costs include stricter immigration controls such as building walls around the border and “kicking out” Muslims from the US. From a bird’s eye view, Nana Addo has been preaching a Ghanaian version of the same message, building up on a general cry that Ghanaians are currently suffering under the Mahama-led government.

3. Both candidates see nothing good in the incumbent party

Granted, this is what drove each candidate to stand for the position of president in their countries, but Nana Addo and Donald Trump have had very few positive words about the performance of the presidents they wish to replace. Whether this is truly reflective of what Mahama and Obama have done while in office in Ghana and the US respectively is an issue for another day.

4. To these two individuals, any political contest they lose is not genuine.

Both Nana Addo and Donald Trump have made comments about their respective elections, suggesting strongly that they expect to win. This presupposes that any election they don’t win, they believe has been rigged. For Nana Addo, this was evident during the 2012 elections in Ghana where he dragged the winning NDC and the Electoral Commission to court in a case that stretched several weeks because he believe he had been underdealt in the process.

5. Both candidates are the older in the race

Donald Trump is 70 years whereas his opponent Hillary Rotham Clinton is 69 years. Nana Addo is 72 years whereas John Mahama is just 57 years of age.
