‘My son was not a thief’ – Mother protests son’s innocence

The mother of 26-year-old Joseph Adjei, the young man shot and killed by police on Thursday, is denying reports her deceased son was a robber.

She said this when the authorities of the Accra Regional Police Command visited them to commiserate with the family of the deceased man.
Speaking to Citi news mother of the deceased said her son was with her in the room when the police came to her, dragged her son on the floor and beat him.

She remained adamant her son was not a thief saying “My son is not a thief. He helps my nephew in his work.”

Meanwhile a family friend who also spoke to Citi news said the police came to apologise for putting wrong information on the media.

“We were not happy and today the police came in to clarify issues today, that they were sorry for putting wrong information on air,” he said.

He further added, “He [Joseph] is not a criminal, as they put on air yesterday. That was not the case.”

This family friend stated the police say they will be investigating the issue further.

The Police administration has detained the officer, Sergeant Adorye, who shot and killed Joseph Adjei along with a murder suspect, Adesha Bagagyi.

A police team was in Nmaii Dzorn near East Legon to arrest the suspect who is believed to have killed a young man during last year’s Homowo festivities.

Earlier reports say the officer in question, opened fire after the victims; Adesha Bagagyi, along with Joseph Adjei, attempted to use a machete and an axe to stop the arrest.
