Minority says Komenda Sugar Factory Not Viable

Minority Caucus in Parliament says the viability of the revamped Komenda Sugar Factory commissioned by President Mahama last week is in doubt.

According to the Caucus, the factory is already plagued with grave challenges saying it is not yet time to celebrate as the issues may undermine the profitability of the revamped factory.

At a News Conference in Parliament Thursday, the Minority alleged that the Factory has already been shut down after the inauguration.

The Minority Spokesperson on Trade and Industry, Prof George Gyan-Baffour echoed the issues.

He mentioned the absence of a national sugar policy, the unavailability of irrigation facilities for sugar cane out-grower farmers, the low offer price for the sugar cane and power supply as some of the challenges that need urgent attention.

Prof George Gyan-Baffour touched on power supply to the factory in the face of national electricity problems.

The Minority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu spoke about the irrigation facilities for the out-grower farmers.
