Mass Resignation Mark Akufo-Addo’s Girl’s Victory

The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West in the Greater Accra Region, Madam Ursula Owusu; last Saturday April 9, won the party’s primary, amidst bitterness and mass resignation. Those who left the party, include her Constituency Chairman, Theophilus Tetteh.

Madam Ursula-Owusu, garnered 554 votes, whiles her main rival, Roni Kweku Nicol, polled 317 votes. From the look of things, the party in the constituency is disjointed going into the next election.

Out of 1,200 registered New Patriotic Party (NPP) voters; only 876 casted the ballot, demonstrating how bitter, party supporters and executives were with the processes leading to the primary.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com

A whopping 324 voters stayed away from the polls, while five votes were rejected.

The constituency primary, was put on hold for the past ten months.

Ahead of the primary, thirteen polling station executives, resigned from party over the decision by the flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, and the National Executive Committee (NEC) to okay two registers for the primary.

They resigned, because the party had decided to allow two different registers to be used for Saturday’s primary in the Constituency. They had earlier gone to court to challenge the eligibility of some of the names “smuggled” into the party’s voters’ roll in the Constituency by the sitting MP, Madam Ursula Owusu.

According to the executives, “we have resigned from the party because the NEC and the party’s flagbearer have taken a decision we don’t like”.

Mr. Tetteh’s resignation and subsequent withdrawal from the primary left the contest between the incumbent, Madam Ursula, and Mr. Nicol, an Accra-based entrepreneur.

The executives added that, “we have left the party for the 72-year old politician and twice defeated presidential candidate, as well as his favourite MP to carry all the party activities on their head going into the November 7, polls”.

The supporters rained curses on the flagbearer, claiming they will not work for the flagbearer to go to the Jubilee House, because he does not deserve to be there.

The angry supporters revealed that, because of Nana Addo, they denied Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng, the opportunity to campaign in the Constituency, during the last presidential primary.

They accused the flagbearer of destroying the party, and promised to purchase schnapps to curse his political ambitions.

They said, the reason Nana Addo, favoured the candidature of Madam Owusu, ahead of all the aspirants, was that he is an Akyem and Ursula is also
one.

“Nana Addo’s action, clearly shows that he harbours some deep seated hatred for the people of Ga descent”, they stated.

Before last Saturday’s primary, the sitting MP, had splashed her posters and campaign paraphernalia, along the principal streets in the Constituency, suggesting the party, has okayed her candidature for the 2016 parliamentary election.

The Herald’s visit to Dansoman some months ago, revealed how the sitting MP, had splashed her campaign posters along the main streets, as though she was already a candidate.
