Mahama jabs Akufo-Addo over ‘1-district-1-factory’ policy

John mahama launch

President John Dramani Mahama has taken a swipe at opponent Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo over the latter’s promise of ensuring that each district in the country gets at least one factory if he becomes president. President Mahama says such a policy defies elementary economics.

“Even students of elementary economics know that the locations of sustainable industries are not determined by political districts,” he said.’

“They are determined by factors such as markets, closeness to raw materials, power, water, closeness to ports, tax incentives and many other objective factors.” President Mahama expressed these sentiments over the weekend at the launch of his campaign for re-election.

Held at the Central Region capital of Cape Coast, the event saw the crème de la crème of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) present. President Mahama insisted that if the promise by his opponent is with respect to small and medium scale enterprises, “that is not a new thing”. “It is happening already,” he pointed out.

He said government with the collaboration of the private sector continues to create the enabling environment for these industries to thrive. He said gari processing factories, shea butter processing factories as well as metal fabrication firms, to mention but a few, “are springing up all over the country”.
