Mahama: ´Ghana has the most engineered roads in W/A´

President Mahama has described the nation’s road network as one of the best in West Africa.

He said the road network his administration has constructed for the past three years has helped to position Ghana as the country with the most engineered roads in West Africa.

He cited roads constructed in the Greater Accra, Ashanti and the Central region, and said some major works are ongoing to fix roads which are in bad shape other regions as well.

Delivering his fourth State of the Nation Address since assuming office, President Mahama said the completion of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange will transform Accra and endear the capital of the nation to tourists.

He lamented about the high spate of crashes on the nation’s roads and said he is working with the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to strengthen its “Speak up” campaign in the country.

He stressed that road accidents could be eliminated if passengers learn to speak up especially when motorists drive recklessly.

He congratulated the doctors and staff of especially Kintampo hospital for working to save the lives of survivors of the accident that killed about 63 passengers last week.

He sympathized with the families who lost loved ones in the accident, and promised to work with the appropriate authorities to address the issue road crashes.

President Mahama said he would be equipping the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police Service with the necessary logistics to control speeding on the roads as well as reckless driving.

He promised to liaise with the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) to erect 968 lollipop stands to aid children and vulnerable adults crossing the road.

Addressing his government’s achievement in the area of air transportation, he said the refurbishing of the arrival lounge of the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) terminal two has helped to make the nation the preferred hub for air transport in West Africa.

“This beautiful arrival hall meets international standards”, he said.
The president said the Turkish President will join him on March 1, to cut the sod for the construction of Terminal Three at the Airport which he noted would be able to accommodate about 5 million passengers a year.

He said work on the Kumasi and Tamale Airports is “progressing steadily” and when done would ease air travel to the regions.

Also, the President said a temporary landing site for the Wa Airport is under construction to aid flights going to the Upper West region.
