Mahama Ford motion fiasco a financial loss to the state – Bagbin

Majority leader Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin has described as a colossal loss to the state the sudden recall of Parliament to consider a motion asking that the President be investigated for conflict of interest.

He explained that, the state would have to pay the transportation of all 275 Members of Parliament whom hitherto were vigorous campaigning in their constituencies ahead of the December 7 polls.

The Nadoli Kaleo MP revealed this on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday after the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho dismissed a motion filed by the Minority to investigate President Mahama after he admitted receiving a luxury vehicle, a Ford Expedition, as a gift from a Burkinabe businessman in 2012.

Mr. Doe Adjaho in a 15 minutes address of the House said the motion lacked merit since the case is being investigated by a state anti-graft institution, Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

The Minority in response at a press conference said the ruling of the Speaker is whimsical and capricious.

But Alban Bagbin expressed grave disappointment in the decision of the Minority members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to waste everybody’s time”.

He said the NPP MPs knew from the onset that the call for a bi-partisan probe was a needless duplication because the President is already under investigation by CHRAJ.

“Why is the Minority asking parliament to investigate a matter which is already being investigated by CHRAJ?” he wondered.

The Majority leader was convinced the motion was just to trap President Mahama all in a desperate attempt to throw dirt at the president as the NDC gears up to fight a crucial general election in December.

“They were just creating an opportunity to run at the President because they knew they cannot do it lawfully but the Speaker did not bite the bait” Bagbin scoffed.
