LMVCA Demo: The Police Can’t Investigate Itself – David Asante Tells Mahama

Leader of the pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), David Asante believes the police cannot investigate itself after clashing with unarmed demonstrators last week.

His comment comes after President John Dramani Mahama asked the Police Administration to probe excesses during a demonstration by some Ghanaians to demand a new voters’ register for the 2016 general elections.

President Mahama described the incident as “unfortunate” and charged the Police authorities to examine the event critically and take steps to avert similar occurrence in the future.

But David Asante insisted on NEAT FM morning show ‘Ghana Montie’ that – the police must not be permitted to probe its brutalities that characterized their demonstration in Accra.

The police fired tears gas, sprayed water cannons and mercilessly beat defenseless demonstrators after the police accused them of trying to force their way to the offices of the Electoral Commission, which the police had prior to the march described as security zone and had warned the demonstrators against going there.

Various sections of the public including NPP’s Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have condemned the unprofessional actions by the police.

However, the leader of the group opined that – parliament or some creditable must probe the police – “We don’t trust that the police will do a good job investigating itself. We think Parliament will do a better job. The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Interior has the capacity to do detailed investigations into this brutality”.

Meanwhile, LMVCA has rescheduled their second demonstration from Tuesday to September 29, 2015 – the new date follows negotiations with the police.
