Liberia Presidential Runoff set for December 26, 2017

The National Elections Commission has scheduled the runoff presidential election for December 26.

On the Setting of the Date for the 2017 Presidential Runoff Election

Distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the press, on behalf of the National Elections Commission (NEC), I am pleased to welcome you to this press conference.

Today’s press conference will cover the following areas:

Announcement of the 2017 Presidential Runoff Election Date;
Declaration of Political Campaign for said election;
Arrival of ECOWAS Technical Team; and
Implementation of the Supreme Court Mandate to the Commission
Declaration of Runoff Election Date

Ladies and gentlemen of the press, pursuant to the mandate of the Honorable Supreme Court of Liberia to the National Elections Commission, I am pleased to announce that the 2017 Presidential Runoff Elections will be conducted on Tuesday, December 26, 2017. We realize that this date is immediately after Christmas Day, but call on all registered voters to make this one sacrifice for the good of our democracy and country.

Campaign Period

Accordingly, campaign for the Runoff Election Campaign is hereby declared open and will close at 11:59pm on Sunday, December 24, 2017. We call on the two political parties in the Runoff Election (the Unity Party and the Coalition for Democratic Change) to go about their campaign in a peaceful manner.

Arrival of ECOWAs Technical Team

I am also pleased to announce that the technical team from ECOWAS that reviewed our final voters roll will arrive in country today to provide technical support, where necessary, in the implementation of the mandate of the Honorable Supreme Court.

Implementation of the Supreme Court Mandate

Ladies and gentlemen of the Press, the Commission wishes to assure the two parties and the Liberian people that it will implement all eight counts of the Supreme Court mandate in a transparent manner and will keep all stakeholders including the parties in the Runoff Election updated every step of the way.
