A senior lecturer at the Department of Political Science at the University of Ghana, Dr Ransford Gyampo has criticised Ghanaians for voting leaders, especially presidents, based on trivial issues at the expense of good qualities.

Dr Gyampo, who was speaking to Class News’ Naa Dedei Tettey on Friday 4th March, 2016, said Ghanaians had failed to pay attention to core qualities when electing presidents.

According to him, even though the constitution sets minimum standards for president aspirants, it is important for Ghanaians to look beyond those benchmarks.

He was reacting to calls for an upward review of the qualifications for presidential hopefuls by Professor Stephen Adei, the former rector for the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

Dr Gyampo was of the view that the country was still wallowing in poverty and had not seen much development. To him, citizens should consider important qualities like experience and proven track records of achievement before electing a leader for the country.

“We are still fighting the quagmire of poverty and underdevelopment and you need a certain calibre of people to govern. It is up to [us] the citizens to go beyond the minimum to see the level of experience that people who put themselves there have – their achievements and what they bring on the table. I must say that over the years, we the citizens have not paid attention to some of these basic important things in determining who must lead this country,” he advised.
