NPP Patricia Apeagyei Now Benefits From Women Abuse

Some people, have questioned whether the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, who owns a number of companies, including media houses and employs a numbers females, demands sex from some of these ladies before offering them jobs.

It comes amid condemnations by some Ministers and gender advocates, over his vulgar attack on the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mrs. Charlotte Osei, describing it as reckless, misogynistic and a conduct unbecoming of a Parliamentarian.

The NPP financier, seems to be on a mission yet again to deny the party’s flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the chance to emerge as president in this year’s elections, after his 2012 incendiary and ethnocentric declaration against Gas and Ewes, leading to an overwhelming defeat, especially in the Greater Accra and Volta Regions.

Indeed, even Voltarians and Ga-dangbes in the NPP and across the country, felt unsafe having an NPP government led by Nana Addo.

Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister, Nana Oye Lithur, Foreign Affairs Minister, Hannah Tetteh, Ace Ankomah, have called on the MP, to retract his comments against Charlotte Osei and apologize.

Interestingly, the Media Commission, Peace Council, Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Federation of Female Lawyers and the NPP, are all silent on the issue.

Whilst, the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, described Agyapong’s comment as insulting, the Foreign Affairs Minister and MP for Awutu Senya West Constituency, said it was “a vicious personal attack …; most unfortunate”. Ace Ankomah, asked for an outright public condemnation on the comment.

The NPP MP, launched a scathing attack on Charlotte Osei, alleging that she was appointed in exchange for sex, while addressing supporters of the opposition NPP at Asokwa; a suburb of Kumasi during the campaign launch of the Asokwa MP, Patricia Apeagyei on Sunday.

He said, some highly placed officials in government told Osei to “bring your buttocks in exchange of EC Chair position.”

Amazingly, Patricia Apeagyei, had been a victim of similar vulgar attack by NPP’s Maxwell Kofi Jumah, who years ago, accused her of trading sex for the position of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) boss during the Kufuor regime.

Ironically, she is yet to speak against what Kennedy Agyapong said, as in her case Kofi Jumah was condemned by some prominent members of society.

Meanwhile, some people have also questioned whether, Ace Ankomah, Nana Oye and Hanna Tetteh; all lawyers, were out defending one of their own.

Mrs. Osei, is also a lawyer and a classmate of some of them. To them, if Kennedy Agyapong, had effectively been dealt with in the several instances, including his vulgar attacks on Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa alias Afia Schwarzenegger, a comedian and a presenter on UTV, leading to her lost of job, he would not have continued.

“The condemnations are necessary, but too late in the day. Because Ken Agyapong, started pushing the country to the brink of explosion long ago”, one lady said.

Businessman, Ibrahim Mahama, President John Mahama, Afia Schwarzenegger, ex-Chief of Staff; Kwadwo Mpini, President John Kufuor, Paul Afoko, Kwabena Agyepong, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Ace broadcaster, Kwami Sefa Kayi, Alhaji Bature Iddrisu, Sam George and ethnic groups like the Ewes and Gas, have all been victims of Agyapong’s vulgarity and incendiary remarks, yet many people remained silent.

Ato Kwamina Dadzi of Accra-based Joy FM, was threatened by him with assault in the full glare of his colleague journalists.

But, his attack on the EC boss, has drawn a quick rebuttal from Oye Lithur, who described Mr. Ayapong’s comments as regrettable, adding that “women of Ghana will not countenance such comments and personal attacks on women who have committed to serve Ghana in public office.”

“You are in Public Office and should promote non-discrimination, respect for human dignity and gender equality by your comments and conduct,” Oye Lithur added.

Private legal practitioner, Ace Anan Ankomah, has also condemned the MP’s comments and called on Ghanaians to speak against the development.

“I call on all well-meaning Ghanaians to speak up and out against this and any other denigration of women. The African woman works against considerable odds to attain heights that men take for granted.

It is not allowed for her to be denigrated in this manner, simply because a person disagrees with her. I call on political parties whose members make such comments to have the guts, spine and cojones to condemn such statements too.”

Without making reference to the MP’s comment, Madam Hanna Tetteh in a Facebook post on Monday June 27, said Charlotte Osei, was appointed based on merit, and that those who have concerns about her activities, should speak out, but with decorum.

The post read, “The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission is a qualified lawyer who has worked as a competent professional throughout her legal career and who also is the immediate past Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic education. To suggest that she had no competence to be appointed Electoral Commissioner and to subject her to a vicious personal attack is most unfortunate.”

She added that, “Any citizen can complain about the Electoral Commission, the way they are executing their mandate and preparing towards the upcoming elections. Those are the benefits of living in a democracy, but the personal attacks on the EC Chairperson are uncalled for, and are designed to undermine her credibility and her leadership of the organization. No political party is contesting elections against the electoral commission, we should not undermine the integrity of the organization or the Chairperson on the back of allegations that have not, and most likely cannot be substantiated.”

Also reacting to the comment, Executive Director of Abantu for Development, Rose Mensah Kutin, said the legislator’s penchant for making disparaging comments, must be reined in.

“We as women are tired of comments like that. This is a woman who is a professional. She has been given the position of Chair of the Commission, if we have issues with her performance; we need to deal with it as such. What a man and woman do in bed, if they are consenting adults, is nobody’s business,” she said.

The Minority, which Mr. Agyapong is a member of, says it will not comment on the matter, Joy News Parliamentary Correspond, Elton John Brobbey reported yesterday, but the Majority and the Women Caucus, are expected to issue a statement on the allegations.
