JUSSAG unhappy Akufo-Addo didn’t consult them on CJ appointment

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSSAG) is unhappy with President Akufo-Addo’s decision to appoint a new Chief Justice without their knowledge.

Though it is not a constitutional requirement for the President to consult JUSSAG members before making such appointments, JUSSAG President, Alex Nartey, thinks the role of judicial staff in the discharge of duties of the Chief Justice is crucial hence the need for the President to have conferred with them before making the appointment.

Speaking on Gold Power Drive Friday, Alex Nartey denied media reports that JUSSAG had earlier expressed reservations about the appointment of Justice Sophia Akuffo as Ghana’s new Chief Justice.

“JUSSAG has never in anywhere expressed reservations about any Supreme Court judge being considered for nomination as Chief Justice,” Alex Nartey told host of Samuel Eshun.

Alex Nartey was nonetheless unhappy that President Akufo-Addo did not consult his outfit before settling on madam Sophia Akuffo saying “what goes on to determine the success of a Chief Justice goes beyond constitutional provision.”

“You cannot rule out the fact that every Chief Justice has worked with people and needs people to work with. You can also not rule out the fact that judicial service workers are involved in the management of the judicial service.”

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has outdoored Justice Sophia Akuffo as new CJ at a short ceremony held in Accra today.

The President vouched for the integrity and the depth knowledge of Madam Sophia Akuffo who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1995 by former President Rawlings. President Akufo-Addo also praised Justice Sophia Akuffo for her diligence and discipline.

Madam Sophia Akuffo will be sworn-in if parliament approves her nomination.
