Jomoro fishermen get outboard motors

Fishermen in the Jomoro District in the Western Region have received 58 Yamaha “40 horsepower” outboard motors from the government for their business.
The gesture formed part of the government’s subsidised outboard motors to fishermen in the country to enhance their work this fishing season.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr George William Somiah, presented the machines to the District Chief Fisherman, Nana Emmanuel Odwiri Kwansah, at a short ceremony at Half-Assini.

Making the presentation, Mr Somiah said the gesture signified President Mahama’s personal intervention in the fishing industry to improve the lot of the fishermen.

He said another consignment of the machines would arrive in the district in due course and urged those who did not benefit from the consignment to exercise restraint for their share the next time around.

On behalf of the fishermen, the chief fisherman expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the President for the kind gesture which exhibited his concern for fishing in the country.

He said the gesture would go a long way to relieve them of the huge financial burden of procuring the equipment individually at the open market.

According to him, an outboard motor costs GH¢12,740 at Japan Motors, but the government had given it to them at a highly subsided price of GH¢6,000.

He noted that the President’s intervention was timely as they were in the season of bumper harvest, describing the development as unprecedented in the history of the country.

It would be recalled that last week, President Mahama presented outboard motors to fishermen in Axim in the Western Region during his campaign tour of that region.

The President had early on made a similar presentation in Accra.
