Ghana’s former president Jerry John Rawlings has sued the publishers of Africa Watch Magazine for defamation.

In its May edition, the magazine ran a story titled “Now This Man needs your prayers, Parkinson’s disease eats Rawlings’ strength away”, that said Mr Rawlings had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a chronic neurological disorder resulting in the lack of control over movement and balance.

According to the magazine, it reached the conclusions based accounts by the former president’s doctors in Ghana and South Africa.

According to Mr Rawlings, the story was “injurious to his reputation as he and his immediate family and his team of staff were inundated with calls from friends and family members all over the country and abroad and harassed by the media following the outbreak of the said story.”

The Daily Graphic reports that the suit was filed at the High Court in Accra and has among its six respondents General Media Strategies Inc, (the publishers) Liberty Media Concepts (Ghana office of the magazine) and Steve Mallory, the executive editor.
