Jake’s death: ‘March has had a great toll’ – Mahama

President John Mahama has said the month of March has had a great toll on Ghana, as far as deaths of prominent Ghanaians are concerned.

He tweeted his deepest condolences to the family of late chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, who died Sunday dawn in London at the age of 70.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey’s death follows that of Eastern regional police commander, DCOP Awuni, last week. In early March, Ghana also lost comedian Bishop Bob Okala, whose death followed that of another comedian, Nkomode, in February.

Mr Obetsebi-Lamptey, an advertising expert, died from an illness.

He served as Chief of Staff in the Kufuor administration and later as Minister of Tourism. He is credited with the rebranding of Valentine’s Day as Chocolate Day in Ghana. He is also credited with the introduction of Friday wears in Ghana, as part of measures to promote made-in-Ghana goods. His father was one of the Big Six in Ghana’s political history. In 2007, he run with 16 others in the NPP’s presidential primaries but lost. He was 70.

On December 16 last year, social media got rife with rumours of his death but it later turned out not to be true.

Tributes have also poured in from former President Jerry Rawlings and his wife, the NPP’s falgbear Nana Akufo-Addo, amongst a raft of others.
