Nasiru Issahaku’s ties with NDC “immaterial”– Akoto Osei

A former finance minister Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei has said the fact that the new governor of the Central Bank has ties with the ruling National Democratic Congress is of no relevance to the position he now holds.

President John Mahama Monday appointed Nasiru Issahaku as governor of the Central Bank following the early retirement of Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah.

Issahaku, until his appointment was one of the two deputies at the bank during the tenure of Kofi Wampah.

Critics have said his affiliation with the NDC will cloud his judgment and make it difficult for him to check government borrowing, especially as the country heads for elections in November.

Speaking to Morning Starr host Nii Arday Clegg Tuesday, the Old Tafo MP said the volume of work at the Central bank will make it difficult for the new governor to make partisan considerations.

“I overheard somebody talking about his political background; that is completely immaterial. It’s either you are competent or not. Your political background cannot help you. The only thing it may do for him is that he will have access to the President easily but as a governor, you should have access to the President,” he said.
