I’m proud of Nana Addo – Twum Boafo

The former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Free Zones Board, Kwadwo Twum Boafo has stated his branding of the then New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate and President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a ‘violent thug’ who was desperate for political power in the run up to the 2016 elections was not a statement of fact.

Nana Akufo-Addo, since his first attempt at the presidency in 2008, has suffered a lot of castigations from some functionaries of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) including accusations of violent conduct, cocaine addiction, ill health, among others.

One of the leading figures of the NDC who made such accusations was the Mr Twum Boafo who reportedly stated on Radio Gold’s Alhaji and Alhaji before the elections:

“I will say it again that this country is on a precipice, that we have a violent thug, who wants to be president of this country at all cost. We have a man who absolutely has no campaign message, who is now begging to be voted for. Ghanaians should never make up their mind to vote for an unforgiving individual, causing all the mess in the country just for his personal interest to become the president of this land.”

“I have faith in the Ghanaian people that they would never vote into power such a man who has on three (3) occasions within his own party and twice from the Ghanaian people lost elections due to his lack of respect….”

But according to him, Nana Akufo-Addo is a man he admires and that his statement was part of a political strategy which was aimed at making him [Akufo-Addo] unattractive to voters.

Explaining his ‘wrongful description of Nana Akufo-Addo on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs Wednesday, he said:

“I don’t want to go back to the history of Nana Addo. All the things I said about him were a strategy. I am proud of Nana Addo for a reason….he has suffered and tried very hard to be President. Four decades is not a joke”.

For him, it is imperative that Nana Addo was given enough support to succeed as his success will be of benefit to all Ghanaians

“He [Akufo-Addo] needs to be given the chance to succeed. We need to give him the necessary support and respect to succeed. As I am talking to you, I am jobless. So if Nana Addo succeed and I get a job again, I will be happy”
