John Dramani Mahama has revealed that when voted back into power, the NDC would continue paying the allowances of teacher and nursing trainees

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has revealed that when voted back into power, the NDC would continue paying the allowances of teacher and nursing trainees.
In the run-up to the 2016 general elections, the issue of allowances became a major campaign issue for the NPP after the then NDC government scrapped allowances of trainee teachers and nurses in 2014.
According to Mahama, his decision and that of his government to scrap the then existent allowance was to allow for the expansion of various infrastructure in the country.
I’ll continue paying trainee allowances if I am given the nod in 2020 – Mahama
Speaking during one of his social media interactive conversations dubbed ‘Let’s talk with JM’, he said his government won’t cancel the allowances should he be given the nod again.
“... we are going to continue paying trainee allowances, but we will improve the student loan and adapt it so that it serves the same purpose as the allowances.
After being met with stiff opposition from educational and health stakeholders, the New Patriotic Party restored the allowances when they won the elections in 2016.
In other news, information minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has stated that it is of no use to jubilate over the directive from the Supreme Court on the compilation of the new voters’ register.
According to him, the order from the Supreme Court shouldn’t be seen as an indication to stop the EC from doing what it intends to do. It is of no use to celebrate Supreme Court’s directive to EC – Oppong Nkrumah
In an interview on Citi FM, he said the order from the EC is in tandem with the basic principles of the law.
