GWCL loses Ȼ12M to water theft every month

The Ghana Water Company has started a crackdown on water theft after monthly revenue losses rise to 12 million cedis.

Director of Geographical Information Services at the Company Richard Appiah Otoo has told Joy News that teams have been dispatched to arrest offenders.

Residents in some parts of Ghana have had no water run through their taps for years.

The shortage causes many to walk long distances in search of water while others resort to the use of sachet water for domestic and commercial use.

According to Richard Appiah Otoo, the exercise is expected to improve water supply in the country.

“We are putting up District Metered Areas (DMAs), where all areas across Ghana are metered in smaller units so we put meters where consumers will not know but we will know how many volumes of water we are pushing to all areas,” he said.

Richard Appiah added that the DMAs will help GWCL to know if there is any deficit in the volumes of water supply and the expected revenue from each area.

“If we strike out the difference, and we see that there’s huge deficit in what we expect then we can focus our attention and track down all the unscrupulous activities that go on in the various neighbourhoods”, he stated.
