GOYCA LADIES CALL ON HON KENNEDY AGYAPONG TO BE DECOROUS IN HIS SPEECH

The Women’s wing of the Gonjaland NDC Youth Caucus (GOYCA) wishes to join the many discerning voices in condemnation of the unsavory remarks made by Hon Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for the Assin Central, in respect of the person of Mrs Charlotte Osei, Chairperson Of the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

We are strongly appalled and heartbroken by these chauvinistic comments and therefore wish to state without equivocation that Hon Agyapong’s comments are irresponsible, barbaric and backward.

People of his stature, in the least have a moral obligation to promote non-discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race, etc. It is therefore unfortunate that he has chosen to stand against such. In our view, The Assin Central Legislator’s indecent effusions have become one too many, and that the time to mobilise against his conduct is now. His penchant for vulgarity and violence is becoming too legendary. He and his likes must be tamed, perhaps in the most legitimate means possible. We want to use this opportunity to crave the indulgence of all the converging voices on this matter to stick together in our glorious believes to sustain the pressure on the self-conceited Agyapong to retract and apologise unreservedly to the EC Chair and the people of Ghana.

While his comments do not surprise us given his record of loose and nonsensical talk, (ie his declaration of war on Ga’s & Voltarians and his caustic tit-for-tat banter with a female radio personality, Afia Schwarzenegger), it is incredible that known NPP bigwigs led by their Flag bearer (Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo) have shamelessly decided to defend him on this matter. Now, we ask if these individuals have any principles at all! And would their response to such derogatory remarks be any different were it that Madam Charllote Osei were their wife, sister or auntie?

His comment is not just an insult to the person of the EC Chairperson, it’s an insult to womanhood. Sadly, he made these comments at the campaign launch of an NPP Parliamentary Candidate who is also a woman and for once was equally a victim of such abuses by another NPP Sitting MP. These are some of the reasons why some women shy away from sensitive positions and even politics because they’re tagged prostitutes by supposed responsible men in responsible positions like the Member of Parliament.

We are particularly disappointed that such a man is supposedly a law maker for Ghanaians who is supposed to promote and champion women empowerment . Such ignorance and arrogance has no place in our nation because it has the tendency of wreaking untold damage on the moral fiber of the very nation we are seeking to build which is why we seek the mandate of the people to lead them.

We call on Hon Agyapong to do the honorable thing by apologizing to Mrs Osei and Ghanaians at large.
We expect all well meaning Ghanaians to condemn such denigrating and misogynistic acts by his likes.
