Gov’t withdraws communication interception bill

Government has withdrawn the Interception of Postal Packets and Telecommunication Messages Bill 2016 from Parliament.

The Withdrawal was necessitated by what the Ministry of Interior termed some compelling reasons after deliberations with the Committee for Defence and Interior as well as the consideration of various memoranda from some individuals and the civil society groups to Parliament on the Bill.

The Bill attracted some public agitations when it was first laid in the House on the 3rd of February this year.

There were apprehensions that the passage of the Bill may lead to invasion of people’s privacy in respect of communication.

The Deputy Minister of Interior James Agalga was on the Floor today to affect the withdrawal.http://ghanapoliticsonline.com/

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of the Interior James Agalga later laid a fresh Interception of Postal Packets and Telecommunication Messages Bill for the consideration of the House.
