Govt begins $660m Accra drains dredging project

Govt through the Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, yesterday toured some dredging project sites in Accra to ascertain the level of work done, ahead of the wet season.

The dredging of the major drainage is part of efforts to minimize the effects of the annual flooding the capital city experiences, especially in the rainy season, which destroys properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.

Some of the sites are Nima South drain, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie, Graphic Road, the Odaw river and the Korle Lagoon.

The Accra Mayor said the dredging of the drains was the first phase of plans to keep the city’s gutters free of solid waste to allow for free flow of water anytime it rained, the second phase is enforcing sanitation laws to punish persons who would be caught violating the laws.

He added that “The project is the local content aspect of the $US660 million Conti project, which involves the construction of drainage system for Accra.”
