Government’s transformation agenda will cover all – Mahama

President John Mahama has assured traditional authorities in the country that every part of the country will receive its fair share of development in line with the government’s transformation agenda.

While urging chiefs who were still expecting some level of development in their locality to exercise restraint as the government was doing everything possible for every part of the country to have its share of the national cake, the President underscored the need for chiefs to be agents of development through the promotion of peace in their localities.

President Mahama gave the assurance when Konkomba chiefs led by the Paramount Chief of the Saboba Traditional Area, Ubor Cheek Binalibemi Kambonja I, called on him at the Flagstaff House.

With the general election fast approaching, the President reiterated his commitment to the chiefs to a fair and transparent election and urged other political leaders to do same.

The chiefs, numbering about 110, were from the Northern, Volta, Brong Ahafo, Ashanti and the Eastern regions.

Purpose of visit

Ubor Kambonja told President Mahama that the meeting provided the platform to find solutions to problems confronting the north of the country to facilitate peaceful co-existence and mutual understanding.

He said the main purpose of the visit was to offer the chiefs of Kikpakpan the opportunity to officially thank the President for personally attending and gracing the occasion at the 38th annual Easter Convention of the Konkomba Youth Association (KOYA), an event that brings all Konkombas together to deliberate on developmental issues, challenges and the way forward.

Ubor Kambonja expressed appreciation to President Mahama for donating a tractor and a pickup to the KOYA and a Pickup to the paramount chief of Saboba.

The paramount chief used the opportunity to thank the President for appointing some people from the Konkomba area into the government.

He named them as Mr. Moses Bukari Mabengba, Ghana’s Ambassador to Angola, Mr. Kofi Mbui, a Special Assistant at the Presidency, and recently Mr. Kenneth Wujangi, a Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations).

Development projects

Ubor Kambonja acknowledged some development projects the government had provided in the Saboba District since President Mahama took office.

They are the extension of electricity to rural communities in the Saboba District, the construction of a community senior high school at Wapuli in the district, the near completion of a Ghana Commercial Bank in Saboba and the construction of the Yendi-Saboba-Chereponi road.

He stated that the Eastern Corridor Road which linked the north to the south, when completed, would have a potential of increasing socio-economic activities in the area.

“We are also aware of other developmental projects being carried out in other districts where Konkombas live,” he said.

Ubor Kambonja, however, expressed some concerns regarding the siting of a nursing training school or a college of education in the Saboba District.

He called for the construction of a bridge over River Oti to facilitate the free movement of goods and services to neighbouring towns, adding that since 1988 when Saboba was made a district capital alongside others, its hospital facilities had not been upgraded.

The traditional leader talked about the provision of potable water in the district that was of grave concern to the people, saying water delivery was in short supply in the district because of the growing population He further called for a senior high school to be cited at Gbentri in the East Mamprusi District and Sanguli in the Tatale-Sanguli area in order to bring secondary education to the doorstep of the people living around that area.
