Government, two years ago, announced its intention to establish a school of petroleum in one of the country’s universities.

It therefore came as a surprise and threw the whole student body into a state of jubilation when the President announced that UMaT met the selection criteria.

UMaT is better placed to run the Petroleum course because the school has strong collaboration with one of the best Petroleum institutes in Nigeria.

Among the many things that the Vice Chancellor of the UMaT Professor Jerry Kumah is grateful for, is the provision of a one-point-one million euro laboratory equipment to enable the university to start a Renewable Energy Engineering programme next academic year

President Mahama, said government takes exceptional interest in the University of Mines because it shares in the vision the transformational agenda.

He announced that government has approved the reconstruction of the three kilometre access roads on campus.

The President later inaugurated a four storey (251 rooms) students hostel at the University of Mines.

The hostel, a GetFund project will accommodate twenty four percent of the student population.

Currently all tertiary institutions in the country are benefiting from one project to the other.

Government also presented a brand new bus to University’s SRC.

President Mahama, has directed the GetFund to complete all projects before awarding new contracts.
