Ghanaians have regretted voting for NPP – Allotey Jacobs

Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Allotey Jacobs says some Ghanaians are beginning to regret voting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, interactions with people in Cape Coast prior to his party’s unity walk on Sunday show that Ghanaians are disgruntled.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Morning Show ‘Kokroko’ on Wednesday, Mr Jacobs said Ghanaians are beginning to realize that not all that glitters is gold.

He claims that the “brutal” show of support and the outpouring of love for former President John Mahama shows that all is not well.

Mr Jacobs said the former president spent more than two hours with traders and ordinary Ghanaians and none of them seemed impressed with the way the Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration is handling the affairs of the country.

“This means that we are now back again. This gives us comfort that in 2020 things will go well…that is the signal”, he said.

The NDC’s unity walk campaign forms part of strategies toward reorganizing its support base and to re-energise party faithful as it plans to recapture power in the next general elections to be held in 2020.

Many people in the party are yet to get over the party’s humiliating defeat in the 2016 December general elections, and it is hoped that the unity walk – to be held in other regions of the country before the year ends – a recommendation made in the Prof Kwesi Botchwey Committee report- will lift up spirits.

But it is not certain if this will be achieved.

At the just ended edition of the unity walk held in Cape Coast, critics have said the walk was made for former President John Dramani Mahama with the motive to bring him back as leader of the party for 2020 general elections.

A development many party supporters are unimpressed with. They believe other people who have expressed interest in the presidential race should have been given the opportunity to speak at the event.

They cast doubts on the ability of the event to bring unity to the party. For most of them, it will rather sow seeds of disunity.

But Mr Allotey disagrees. For him, president Mahama is still a leading figure in the party and there is nothing wrong with what was done.
“He [Mahama] is above all of them,” he stressed.

Mr Allotey is confident that the NDC will come back to power in 2020.
