Ghana To Reduce Aviation Fuel By 20%

Ghana is expected to reduce the price of aviation fuel by 20 percent.

This follows an appeal by industry players to President Mahama for a reduction of Ghana’s aviation fuel which is the most expensive in the sub-region and airlines prefer to refill their aircraft in neighbouring countries. This they said is also a major strain on their operations.

President Mahama who announced the decision when he inaugurated the newly refurbished and expanded International Arrival Hall at the Kotoka International Airport and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority’s Training School in Accra, said, the reduction is in line with the government’s vision to make Ghana an aviation hub in West Africa.

Accompanied by the Minister of Transport, Fiifi Kwetey, Board Chairman of Ghana Airports Company Ltd, Tony Lithur, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Ltd, Charles Asare, Director-General of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, GCAA, Simon Allotey, and other officials, President Mahama toured the refurbished arrival hall and other facilities. He was impressed with the work done.

The President, led by Mr. Allotey also toured the seven-storey Ghana Civil Aviation Authority’s training school to familiarize himself with the facilities.

He prayed that the aviation training school becomes a center of excellence in aviation in West Africa.

The President was optimistic that the 20 percent reduction in aviation fuel will attract other airlines to refill at the airport.

Minister of Transport, Fiifi Kwetey asked the management of GCAA to maintain the facility in order to safeguard the immense investment that has been put into the construction of the building, which include an aviation simulation center.

The Director-General of GCAA, Simon Allotey said reputable international aviation organisations including ICAO, have adopted the Ghana Aviation Training Academy, GATA, as a center for the training of aviation experts in West Africa.

President Mahama rounded up his inspection with a visit to the construction site of terminal 3. Progress of work was more than 25 percent and the hundreds of Ghanaian workers were excited to see the president.
