Ghana Observes 1st Anniversary Of Devastating Twin Disaster Today

Today is exactly one year when the country witnessed the devastating twin disaster of flood and fire, which claimed over 150 lives at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

Marked as the June 3 twin disaster or the “Black Wednesday”, the day still brings painful memories to many Ghanaians, even those who did not lose loved ones or properties to the marauding floods and the raging inferno from the Goil filling station that burnt people alive.

On that day, what started as a normal rainy evening resulted in the Odaw River over flowing its banks and flooded the Nkrumah Circle and adjoining communities and the Goil filling station which caught fire. You here ..Www.Ghanapoliticsonline.com

The Calamity threw the country into a state of mourning and loss. Well-meaning individuals, organisations and state institutions rose up to the occasion by donating in kind and cash to bring relief to the distressed and afflicted.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) outlining activities to commemorate the 1st Anniversary of the disaster has appealed to families who cannot trace any of their members following last year’s June 3 disaster to come forward and help identify the numerous dead bodies at the morgues. You Here GhanaPoliticsonline.com

The Chief Executive of the Assembly, Alfred Vanderpuiye who said this at a news conference in Accra, noted that some bodies have been left at the morgues unclaimed.

He said government is committed to support the victims and survivors of the disaster.

Therefore, families who cannot trace their relatives should be bold and come to identify the dead bodies in order to put a closure to the event and give the unfortunate victims a befitting burial.

Meanwhile, reports say there will be a memorial service at the Ernest Bruce Methodist Church, Adabraka in Accra not far from the place where the disaster occurred this morning.
