Ghana has secured 125 million dollars to support Agric -President Nana Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has disclosed that the country has secured an amount of 125 million Canadian dollars to support agriculture.

The amount he said during the State of the Nation address have been secured from Canada to support a national campaign towards investing into agriculture.

The campaign he said would be anchored on the pillars that would transform agriculture by the provision of improved seeds, provision of fertilizers and the use of E-Agriculture.

He added that the District Assembly would be tasked to identify and register all the progressive farmers in each of the 216 districts.

According to the President, the starting point in turning around Ghana’s fortunes is agriculture but unfortunately, the state of agriculture in Ghana is not good.

“Farmers are left on their own, food prizes are high and the country has to import almost everything we eat including vegetables from our Sahelian neighbours. And yet agriculture provides the best opportunity to use modern methods to change the lives of people within the shortest possible time,” he stated.

He added that “we have to irrigate our lands and equip farmers with the skills needed to make farming a worthy business. We are in to popularize farming by encouraging many people to take it up as a full time or part time activity and a national campaign would be launched to that effect.”

“For far too long, farmers have been left on their own without the support of government and we have decided to embark on a program to provide water for all year farming. The one-village one-factory policy would rapidly get the support of everybody to help transform food insecurity in Ghana.”

The three northern regions in particular he said would benefit from the initiative as he looks forward to public investment in agriculture from the first budget of government.

“Food processing has been the first step towards industrialization in every country and it is time for us to take it seriously.”

The President said, he looks forward to an exciting time in the agriculture sector of the country.
