Ghana @ 59 Preparations Underway

All was set for Ghana’s 59 Independence Day commemorations on Sunday March 6 as the Black Star Square, venue for the national event was undergoing a final facelift.

GNA team observed on Thursday that workers were busily painting and re-filling of chippings to level the grounds for easy parade.

Special Female Dispatch Riders of the Motor, Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service were also at the grounds sharpening acrobatic skills and masterly of maneuvering of the motor bike.

Students from the Galaxy International School around the grounds after being taking through some rehearsal by their teachers.

Assistant Superintendent of Police J. Appiah, Head of the Bicycle Riding Department, Accra Central MTTD in an interview with the GNA said the Department would play a critical role on the day as they led dignitaries.

“As part of our role, we need to put up special performance, display skills and masterly on the motor bike to add colour and beauty to the event,” he said.

ASP Appiah noted that ten female dispatch riders were being trained at the moment for the occasion.

The Kenyan President, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta, was expected to be the Special Guest of Honour at the 59th Independence Anniversary celebration.

President John Dramani Mahama will, on Sunday, 6th March, review a national parade of school children, voluntary organisations and security services at the Black Star Square to commemorate the anniversary.

The theme for this year’s celebration is: “Investing in the Youth for Ghana’s Transformation”.

A statement issued by the Flagstaff House Communications Bureau, in Accra, said President Mahama, who is expected to be joined by two visiting heads of state, will deliver the Independence Anniversary Address.

This will be preceded after a march past by security personnel and school children, drills and equipment display by the security agencies and performances by various groups.

There will also be parades in all regional and district capitals across the country, while the country’s missions abroad will also host National Day events across the world.
